This highly important manuscript plan of the Battle of Saratoga is signed by Tadeusz Kościuszko, one of the great heroes of that battle. In September 1777 Kościuszko was instrumental in securing the great American victory over General Burgoyne at the Battle of Saratoga, which is regarded as the turning point of the war. The map shows all of the major elements of the battlefield, and was most likely produced toward the end of the war or shortly thereafter. The note in Polish at the base (on a separate, tipped on slip of paper) states that "the map is drawn in Kościuszko's own hand" (loosely translated), and suggests that he presented it to a fellow emigre, a number of whom served with the Continental Army.
