A new and correct plan of the town of Boston, and provincial camp

Published in the July 1775 issue of the Pennsylvania Magazine or American Monthly edited by Thomas Paine, this was the earliest printed depiction of Boston after the battle at Bunker Hill, June 17, 1775. The inset shows the location of the battle, as well as provincial (American) lines in the communities surrounding Boston. Printed weeks before news of the battle reached England, this simple sketch made clear the commanding position enjoyed by the Continental Army. During the following months, these lines were strengthened by thousands of American volunteers, forcing a British retreat from Boston.
